What is a dental hygienist?
A dental hygienist is a trained dental professional. A hygienist works alongside the dentist to diagnose problems and provide care, assisting the dentist whenever needed. They may also take over specific duties and tasks.
What does a dental hygienist do?
Dental hygienists provide a number of services, including:
- Dental cleanings
- Patient screening and preliminary exams
- Patient education
- X-rays and impressions
- Some treatments, including preventive care (fluoride and sealants) and some surgical tasks (removing sutures, administering anesthesia, etc.)
What training do dental hygienists receive?
Dental hygienists complete a number of training requirements and certifications to become licensed to provide professional care. These requirements include:
- A college degree from an institution approved by the Commission of Dental Accreditation (CODA). The minimum requirement is an associate degree, but many hygienists complete bachelor’s or master’s degrees.
- A passing score on the National Board Dental Hygiene examination and on a state-based clinical exam.
Hygienists must renew their licenses every one to three years.
